What To Do When You Have To Act Like Everything's

Hi  Friends ,

You might have read about successful individuals or celebrities who battle with depression and other forms of mental health issues due to certain pressures that have been placed on them.

Expectations, commitment to deliver, or having to act in a certain way have let them to great success, but it comes at a great price too.

What about you?

I'm sure in your own life you'd have felt certain pressures.. you may not even be aware of?

Like wanting to be the best for your partner in a relationship, or wanting to be the best parent to your kid. Or in your job where you have to please your boss and out perform in order to get that promotion.

Between being told we have the same amount of hours in the day as Taylor Swift, and the barrage of memes that claim we should be starting a business, and completing 50-leven projects, there is a pressure to perform at the highest level possible.

Every rapper raps about being a hustler.
So it's no wonder that this pressure to perform can get too much. When we feel like we have to perform all the time or be ‘on,’ sometimes we get so lost in doing that, we lose the essence of just being.

But this need to perform is tied to how we see ourselves. You may think that your worth is dependent on what you’re able to produce or how you’re able to appear to everybody else.

While there are some benefits to performing — in the workplace, in romantic relationships, and in everyday life — if you’re starting to feel burned out from having to be on at all times, you need to ask yourself...

Why do you need to do all this?

Go back to asking why as that's the easiest way of gaining clarity in your purpose for doing. And don't get me wrong. Wanting to perform is good, but it's important to make sure that we are being well, and not just doing well.

So if you do find yourself bordering on burning out, keep in mind to practice more self care. You can try creating daily rituals to help you "feel the feelings" and work through them in a healthy way.

It can be as simple as journaling, talking to someone, or being accountable to someone. Find something that works for you and that will go a long way to alleviate burnout and feed your soul in a positive way.

When you have clarity in what you're doing, you're focusing on what truly matters, and that will reduce the stress and pressures of having to live up to external expectations.

And if you need some help in finding clarity to what you're doing with your life, check out this framework that I use to find Focus.

Cheers,
Leon
