The Power Of A Few Simple Word

The Power Of A Few  Simple Word

Hi –  Friend,

When I was in my first year of secondary school, here in the Irish midlands, my oldest brother was in his final year.

A week before he finished, he had a row with a teacher and he rather explicitly told that teacher what to do with himself.

There was nothing the teacher could do as my brother was leaving anyway.

However, that teacher decided he wanted some revenge and he turned to making my life hell.

For the next three years, I had argument after argument with him.

I would literally get the blame for anything that went wrong.

Of course, being a stubborn teenager, I just fought back but the problems just increased.

However, many of the other teachers would take his side (after hearing stories in the staff room) and I would find myself with even more problems.

Then, at the end of my fourth year, the most feared teacher in the school approached me.

She said ‘Carthage, I hear I have you in one of my classes next year and, I hear you come with baggage.’

I replied ‘Yes, but it isn’t all my fault.’

She responded ‘I just want you to know that you come into my class with a clean slate. If you do something wrong, I will deal with you but then we will move on.’

It meant the world to me to know that I was going to get a fair chance.

I ended up having that teacher for two subjects (Geography & Irish) and it was the best relationship I ever had with a teacher.

As our relationship progressed, I found that other teachers suddenly began to treat me better; maybe because my attitude improved and maybe because they saw that I wasn’t the Devil.

After four years of hell, the final two years of secondary school were good for me.

And, all because one teacher knew how to talk to me and how to build a relationship with me.

It was no conincidence that my two best results in my final exams were in the two subjects she taught me.

I dread to think what my life would have been like if that conversation never took place.

Communication really is that powerful.

If you need to improve your communication skills, this great resouce will get you on the right track >>

Have a fantastic day,
